A large, attractive basil, with silvery, green to grey foliage and a menthol or camphor aroma.

Camphor Basil
Botanical Name: Ocimum kilimanscharicum

Camphor basil is a large growing perennial to 1.3 meters, with ovate silvery, grey green leaves. This basil plant is a highly prized ornamental shrub with white to lilac flowers on tall stalks. As the plant gains height and age the hairy stems become woody. It can look ‘most unlike basil’, especially to those who are unfamiliar with the many types of basil varieties. Camphor basil prefers full sun, is drought tolerant and frost tender. It can be grown in the garden or in large containers.

Camphor basil has an ‘interesting’ aroma and adds a slightly medicinal fragrance to the garden! This basil is the source of commercial camphor production. It can be considered one of the most valuable plants in the garden for its use as an insect repellent, both in the garden and in the house. Dried leaves can be placed in sachets, stored with clothing and used to keep moths at bay. When planted in containers around outdoor living areas the camphor or menthol aroma is pleasing and helps keep annoying mosquitos away.

Due to the pungent aroma and strong taste this basil is not really intended for culinary use. However, some people still suggest using it in salad dressings and sauces. Medicinal uses in the past have included treatment for malaria and fevers. Today it is more likely to be used as a tea or in baths as treatment for colds and flu.

Each basil variety has distinctive features, however, the general properties and growing conditions are very similar and details can be found in our Basil entry.
