Comfrey root powder (Symphytum officinale) is a finely ground form of the traditional "knitbone" herb, ready to mix into poultices, salves, balms, and topical skin preparations. This certified organic comfrey root powder is rich in allantoin and offers the same traditional benefits as the whole root in a convenient powder form that blends easily into carrier oils and creams. Comfrey root powder is for external use only.
Key Benefits
- Convenient powder form: Mixes directly into oils, balms, and creams without the need for simmering or chopping. Ideal for making smooth, even poultices and topical preparations.
- External use tradition: Traditionally used in poultices and salves to support the body's natural recovery from minor bumps, bruises, sprains, and strains.
- DIY skincare ingredient: Popular in homemade creams, body butters, and healing balms. The fine powder disperses evenly, giving a smooth finish to topical products.
- Rich in allantoin: Contains allantoin, a natural compound valued for supporting healthy cell renewal and skin comfort.
- Certified organic: Ground from certified organic comfrey root, free from synthetic pesticides and fertilisers.
Poultice: Mix 2 tablespoons of comfrey root powder with enough warm water to form a thick paste. Spread onto a clean cloth and apply to the affected area for 15 to 30 minutes. For bruise and strain support, combine with Arnica.
Salve making: Stir comfrey root powder into warmed carrier oil (1 part powder to 4 parts oil). Heat gently in a double boiler for 2 to 3 hours, strain through fine muslin, and add beeswax (1 part beeswax to 8 parts oil) to set. Calendula Petals infused alongside make an excellent companion.
Body butter: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of comfrey root powder to homemade body butter or cream recipes. Blends well with Lavender for a soothing topical preparation.
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) in comfrey have very low solubility in oil, which is why oil-based preparations like salves and balms are considered the safest way to use comfrey externally. Water extracts more PAs, which is another reason comfrey should not be taken as a tea.
Comfrey root contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which can be harmful to the liver if taken internally. This product is for external use only. Keep out of reach of pets, as comfrey is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses if ingested.
