Yellow dock root (Rumex crispus) is a classic bitter herb with a long history of use in Western herbal tradition. Valued for centuries as a digestive tonic and gentle bowel regulator, yellow dock root is traditionally used to support healthy digestion, promote regular bowel function, and maintain overall digestive wellbeing. The dried root produces a deeply earthy, bitter decoction.

Key Benefits

  • Digestive tonic: Traditionally used as a bitter herb to stimulate healthy digestion and support the body's natural digestive processes.
  • Gentle bowel support: Contains naturally occurring anthraquinones, which are traditionally used to promote gentle, regular bowel function without harsh effects.
  • Traditional iron herb: Yellow dock root has a long tradition of use as a nourishing herb for those seeking to support healthy iron levels through diet.
  • Skin support: Traditionally used as a "blood cleanser" to support clear, healthy skin from the inside out.
  • Spring tonic: A classic component of traditional spring cleansing blends, often combined with burdock and dandelion root.

Yellow dock decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried yellow dock root to 2 cups of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink 1 to 3 cups daily. The taste is strongly bitter and earthy.

Classic spring blend: Combine yellow dock root with Burdock Root and Dandelion Root for the traditional "spring tonic" trio, a time-honoured combination in Western herbalism. Adding a small amount of Ginger Root helps warm the blend and improve the taste.

Yellow dock's distinctive yellow root colour comes from its anthraquinone content. These are the same class of compounds found in rhubarb and senna, though yellow dock is considered much gentler in its action, making it suitable for longer-term use as a digestive tonic.

Yellow dock is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses due to its oxalate content. Keep dried root stored securely away from pets.
