Botanical Name: Angelica atropurpurea
The species name atropurpurea means "dark purple"; a name given because of it purple/red stems. It is also known as purple-stem angelica, great angelica, masterwort and American angelica along with many other common names.
It is native to Eastern North America and was used by many Native Indian tribes. It was called lagonihah by the Missouri River Indians, they used the leaves for digestion and as a lure for hunting. The Algonquian Indians used angelica for healing, hunting, and fishing. The roots wereo used for swellings, tumours and pain by the Indians of the Great Lakes. The Canadian Malecite Indians used the roots to treat colds and flu. Many tribes dried the leaves to mix with tobacco. It was also used in spiritual ceremonies to prevent the wrath of ghosts.
Angelica atropurpurea makes a striking addition to the garden. It grows up to two metres high when in flower. The deeply divided leaves are borne on thick, hollow, purple/red stems. The flowers, are small and numerous, white to purple in colour, are grouped into large, umbels, followed by oblong fruits.
Like its European cousin A. archangelica, the stems can be candied to eat as a sweet or to decorate cakes and desserts. The stems can also be added to tart fruits for stewing or jam making to neutralize the acidity.
An infusion of the leaves can be taken for indigestion. Angelica root is used in digestive tonics to relieve colic, cramps and flatulence. It is also used to ease spasms in bronchitis and asthma.
Angelica likes a rich moist soil, make sure the area is well drained as the roots will root if they are sitting in water. In colder climates angelica grows best in full sun, in sub-tropical areas grow in semi-shade.
