Botanical Name: Satureja montana citriodora

Lemon Savoury is a dwarf, woody shrub growing to approximately 30cm high. The small ‘thyme like’ leaves are highly aromatic with a lemon scent. The shape is ovate and the leaves are a glossy dark to mid green colour. The erect, unbranched stems may appear velvety in texture due to fine hairs, but this is not always the case. The rose pink flowers are 2 lipped with a tubular appearance. Flowering is in summer from December to March in Australia.

Lemon Savoury grows in sub-tropical, tropical and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, but originates in from East Africa. It may also be called African Lemon Savoury or African Savoury. Lemon Savoury is quite rare and one of 30 savoury plants found throughout the world. However, it is quite different in taste from Summer Savoury, Winter Savoury and Pink Savoury which are all in our catalogue.

Growing Conditions

Lemon Savoury is considered easy to grown and does best in full sun, but will tolerate part shade. The soil should be fertile, but a range of soil types are suitable, as long as it is well drained. Water supply should be regular, but over watering will harm the plant. Since this plant comes from warm regions of the world it will not tolerate frosts and is best kept above 10 C. Lemon Savoury is considered to be an evergreen perennial, but in cold regions it may function as an annual. Propagation may be from cuttings or by sowing seed. The leaves may be harvested all year for culinary purposes.

Culinary Uses

Lemon Savoury has a pleasant lemon fragrance and flavour. It is ideal for chicken and fish dishes, as well as herbal tea. There are many dishes that call for lemon flavouring and this herb may be just right. It can be tossed through salad or used as a garnish, as well as used for many vegetable dishes.
