Botanical Name: Cedronella canariensis

Balm of Gilead is also known as Canary Balm. Common names can be confusing as the name Balm of Gilead is also used for Populus candicans and  Commiphora gileadensis which are completely different plants. This is a good reason for knowing the botanical name of plants, especially if you are using them in food or medicine.

As its botanical name suggests, Cedronella canariensis is native to the Canary Islands. It has since been introduced to other parts of the world, including parts of Europe and North America.

It is a perennial herb with an upright growth habit. It has aromatic leaves and tubular, pink or mauve flowers. It can grow to a height of about 1-2 meters. The plant has a pleasant lemony-mint aroma.

Growing Conditions

Cedronella canariensis prefers well-drained soil and a sunny to partly shaded location. It is somewhat drought-tolerant once established but prefers regular watering for optimal growth. It is not very frost-tolerant and should be protected in colder climates.

Ethnobotanical uses

It has been traditionally used for its aromatic and medicinal properties in the Canary Islands. Over time, it has become somewhat popular in herbal medicine circles in other parts of the world.

Medicinal Uses

The leaves are often used in herbal medicine for their antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Infusions are sometimes made for respiratory ailments like asthma or bronchitis. However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited.

Culinary Uses

Cedronella canariensisis not typically used in cooking, although its aromatic leaves could potentially be used for flavouring in a manner similar to mint or lemon balm.
