Botanical Name: Salvia 'Celestial Blue'

Salvia ‘Celestial Blue’ is a medium to tall perennial growing up to 1 to 1.5 meters high and a similar width. The small aromatic leaves are grey green, long and thin. The leaves are held on upright stems that rise up and outwards in all directions, creating a mound that is covered in purple when in full bloom. The striking floral spikes extend upwards to 40cm above the foliage and carry widely spaced whorls of lavender to royal blue flowers, complemented by many purple bracts. The flowering period is between spring and summer. The flowers are also quite large compared to many salvia varieties, so the show is quite spectacular and the floral spikes are ideal for cut flowers.

‘Celestial Blue’ Salvia was a chance hybrid from seed collected at Las Pilitas Native Plant Nursery and named by the nursery founder, Bert Wilson, for his wife Celeste. It is also called ‘Celestial Blue Sage’ This salvia is a hybrid between Salvia clevelandii (Cleveland Sage ‘Alpine’) and Salvia pachyphylla (California Rose Sage), but there is also a possibility that there is a three way hybrid with inclusion of Salvia leucophylla (California Purple Sage).

The salvia family has over 900 members with an extensive history as culinary, medicinal and ornamental plants. Ornamental salvias have become collectors items, as gardeners try to find a place in their garden for each and every one. There are salvias that will suit every type of soil and climate. More information on the Salvia genus and Common Sage (Salvia officinalis) may be found on our Common Sage page.

Growing Conditions

Salvia ‘Celestial Blue’ is extremely tolerant of many conditions, making it very hardy. It will grow it most soil types including clay and hard gravelly ground. It flowers in the heat of summer and is very tolerant of hot conditions and drought resistant. It has low water requirements and although extra water is welcome in hot weather it does not like wet feet. During winter almost freezing temperatures may be tolerated for a short while, but warmer winters are ideal. A full sun aspect is most suitable, but it will grow well in part shade as well. This salvia is ideal for any tough spots in the garden that seem too hot and dry for other plants.
