Botanical Name: Salvia greggii ‘Alba’

Salvia greggi ‘Alba’ is an evergreen perennial growing to 90 cm tall and up to 120cm wide in its ideal environment. In other regions, the plant is a variable grower and may be smaller with a compact growth habit that can be used for good effect with mass planting. The glabrous, light green leaves are narrow and from 1-2.5cm long. This hardy shrub has woody stems and a tough woody base. The white flowers are small, but the floral display is profuse through spring and summer and even into autumn.

This cultivar of Salvia greggi is also known as White Texas Sage and is one of many white flowering cultivars from this originally red flowered parent. Some suppliers confuse these cultivars due to the many similar names and appearances, for example, Texas Wedding. This plant may also be confused with Texas Sage an orange, red or white flowering cultivar of Salvia coccinea.

The origins of Salvia greggii lie in Texas and Mexico, where it is a common sub shrub growing in rocky soils. It often grows in mountainous regions at 1500 to 2500 meter elevations and is tolerant of both frost and dry conditions. Although there are many cultivars and hybrids with different characteristics, they are usually very hardy and popular plants. Salvia greggii “Alba’ is considered to be one of the hardiest cultivars.

The salvia family has over 900 members with an extensive history as culinary, medicinal and ornamental plants. Ornamental salvias have become collectors items, as gardeners try to find a place in their garden for each and every one. There are salvias that will suit every type of soil and climate. More information on the Salvia genus and Common Sage (Salvia officinalis) may be found on our Common Sage page.

Growing Conditions

Salvia greggii ‘Alba’ is tolerant of frost to about -10 degrees Celsius and warm, dry conditions. It prefers full sun, but in very hot aspects may welcome part shade. It flowers until it is too warm or too cold, when the short days will halt the flowering process. It has low water needs and a well drained soil is required for good plant health.
