Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is a traditional herb used to support the heart and calm the nervous system. The botanical name "cardiaca" reflects its long association with heart health in traditional herbalism. Motherwort tea has been valued for centuries as a gentle nerve tonic, particularly for women, and produces a distinctly bitter infusion with a slightly minty undertone.

Tincture: Motherwort is often preferred as a tincture due to its intense bitterness. Make a 1:5 tincture with 45% alcohol.
Blending: Combine with Hawthorn Berry for a traditional heart support blend. For calming, pair with Passionflower or Lemon Balm to soften the flavour.
The common name "motherwort" literally means "mother's herb," reflecting its long tradition of use by women. In medieval herbalism, it was considered one of the most important herbs for the heart, and Nicholas Culpeper wrote that "there is no better herb to drive melancholy vapours from the heart."
Motherwort is a member of the mint (Lamiaceae) family and is easily recognised by its distinctive palmate leaves and whorls of small pink flowers along the stem.
