    About Dried Herbs

    About our dried herb range

Dried herbs are one of the simplest ways to bring herbal remedies, flavour and fragrance into your daily routine. Store them in airtight containers away from heat and light, and they will keep their potency for one to three years.

We carry over 200 individual herbs in the range, with most available in multiple sizes so you can try a small amount before committing to a larger bag. If you are new to dried herbs, our herbal tea blends are a good starting point.

    Frequently asked questions

How long do dried herbs last?

Most dried herbs keep their potency for 1 to 3 years when stored properly. Whole leaves and flowers last longer than ground or powdered herbs. Keep them in airtight containers, away from heat, light and moisture. If a dried herb has lost most of its colour or smell, it is time to replace it.

What is the difference between culinary and medicinal dried herbs?

Culinary dried herbs are selected for flavour and are commonly used in cooking. Browse our culinary dried herbs range to see what is available. Medicinal dried herbs are chosen for their traditional therapeutic properties and are often used in teas, tinctures, capsules or topical preparations. Some herbs, like rosemary and thyme, cross both categories.

    Are your dried herbs organic?

Most of our dried herbs are certified organic. We source from suppliers around the world and look for organically grown herbs wherever possible. Each product page shows the certification status clearly, so look for Organic in the green bar on the product photo. We also carry a range of Australian grown organic dried herbs.

Do you ship dried herbs Australia-wide?

Yes, we ship dried herbs right across Australia. Regular Post is $10.95 and Express Post is $12.95. Dried herbs are lightweight and travel well. See our shipping information page for full details.

What is the fresh to dried herb ratio for cooking?

The general rule is 3 to 1, so use three times as much fresh herb as dried. If a recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme, use 1 teaspoon of dried thyme. Dried herbs are more concentrated because the water has been removed, leaving the essential oils behind. Add dried herbs earlier in cooking to give them time to rehydrate and release their flavour.

What herbs are in mixed herbs?

Traditional mixed herbs typically contain a blend of oregano, thyme, rosemary, marjoram and sage. The exact mix varies between brands. At Mudbrick Herb Cottage you can buy each of these herbs individually. Our oregano, thyme and rosemary are all certified organic, so you can make your own blend and adjust the ratio to your taste.
