Learn more about this collection

Smudging is the practice of burning dried herbs to cleanse a space, and it has a long history across many cultures. White sage is the most widely used herb for smudging, valued for its strong, clean scent and its traditional association with purification and clearing.

Our smudge stick range includes white sage on its own, as well as blends like white sage and lavender (Australian grown), white sage and lemon myrtle, and white sage, cedar and sweetgrass. We also stock prairie sage and a lemon myrtle stick for those who prefer something different. Each stick is hand-rolled from dried herbs and ready to use.

If you prefer not to have smoke in your home, our smudging sprays offer the same white sage scent in a convenient spray bottle. Choose from white sage, white sage and lavender, or white sage and lemon myrtle. For related products, see our resins and burnables collection.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I use a smudge stick?

Light one end of the smudge stick with a match or lighter and let it catch flame for a few seconds. Then gently blow it out so the herbs are smouldering and producing smoke, not burning with an open flame. Carry it through your space, allowing the smoke to drift into corners, doorways and any areas you want to cleanse. Keep a heatproof dish or abalone shell underneath to catch any falling ash.

Do I need to open windows when smudging?

It is a good idea to open a window or door before you start. This lets fresh air circulate and gives the smoke somewhere to go. Many people like to start at the front door and move through each room, finishing by letting the smoke drift out through an open window.

Do I have to burn the whole smudge stick at once?

No. You can put the smudge stick out at any time by pressing the lit end firmly into a heatproof dish or into sand. Once it is fully extinguished, store it somewhere dry and relight it next time you want to use it. A single stick will last through many sessions.

What is the difference between white sage and prairie sage?

White sage (Salvia apiana) is the most popular herb for smudging and has a strong, distinctive scent. Prairie sage (Artemisia ludoviciana) has a lighter, more herbal aroma and is sometimes preferred by people who find white sage too intense. Both are traditionally used for cleansing and purification.

    What are smudging sprays?

Smudging sprays are a smoke-free alternative to burning a smudge stick. They contain white sage essential oil or hydrosol in a spray bottle, so you get the scent and intention of smudging without any smoke. They are a good option for rental homes, offices, or anyone sensitive to smoke. Browse our white sage, white sage and lavender, and white sage and lemon myrtle sprays.
