Scented Geraniums

21 products

Scented geranium plants are grown for their wonderfully fragrant leaves rather than their flowers. Crush a leaf and you will get scents ranging from rose and lemon to peppermint, coconut and cinnamon. We grow 25 varieties at our Gold Coast nursery, including the popular Rose Geranium, Citronella Geranium and Peppermint Geranium.

Learn more about this collection

Scented geraniums (Pelargonium species) are some of the most versatile plants you can grow. The leaves are the main attraction, with each variety releasing a different fragrance when touched or brushed against. They are easy to grow, handle heat well, and look beautiful in pots, garden borders or as hedging plants.

Our rose geranium plant varieties are the most popular. The classic Rose Geranium and Attar of Rose have a rich, floral scent traditionally used in cooking, skincare and potpourri. The Variegated Mint Rose and Rober's Lemon Rose add visual interest with their patterned leaves.

For citrus lovers, the Lemon Crisp, Lime and Lemon Verbena varieties deliver fresh, zesty scents. The Citronella Geranium is one of our best sellers and is traditionally planted around outdoor living areas. Other favourites include Chocolate Peppermint, Coconut, Nutmeg and Cinnamon.

All scented geraniums are grown organically at our Gold Coast nursery and shipped via Express Post to most Australian states (excluding WA, NT and TAS due to quarantine). Browse our cottage garden plants and natural skincare collections for more ways to use these beautiful plants.

    Frequently asked questions

Do scented geraniums like sun or shade?

Scented geraniums prefer full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. They will tolerate partial shade, but the fragrance and foliage density are best in a sunny spot. In very hot climates, some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. Good drainage is essential as they do not like wet feet.

Which scented geranium smells the best?

That depends on your preference. Rose Geranium and Attar of Rose have a rich floral scent that most people love. Lemon Crisp is beautifully fresh and citrusy. Chocolate Peppermint is a favourite for its unusual sweetness. We recommend growing a few different varieties so you can enjoy a range of fragrances.

Do scented geraniums keep mosquitoes away?

The Citronella Geranium is traditionally planted around outdoor areas for its strong lemon scent, which is similar to citronella oil. While simply growing the plant nearby may help, crushing or brushing the leaves releases more of the aromatic oils. Planting several around a seating area gives the best effect.

How long do scented geraniums live?

In warm climates like the Gold Coast and much of eastern Australia, scented geraniums can live for many years as evergreen perennials. They respond well to regular pruning, which keeps them compact and bushy. In cooler areas prone to frost, they can be grown in pots and moved undercover during winter.

Can you use scented geranium leaves in cooking?

Yes, many scented geranium leaves are edible and add wonderful flavour to baking, syrups, teas and desserts. Rose geranium leaves are the most commonly used in cooking. Place a leaf at the bottom of a cake tin before pouring in batter, steep leaves in sugar syrup, or float them in a pot of tea. Always use organically grown plants for culinary use.

    Do all scented geraniums flower?

Yes, all scented geraniums produce flowers, though the blooms are typically small and delicate compared to regular garden geraniums. They are mainly grown for their scented foliage rather than their flowers. That said, varieties like Scarlet Pet produce quite attractive blooms.
