Whole cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) are one of the most intensely aromatic spices in the kitchen. These certified organic clove buds deliver a warm, sweet, pungent flavour that works beautifully in both savoury and sweet dishes. Rich in eugenol, the compound responsible for cloves' distinctive warm aroma, they have been a prized spice for thousands of years across Ayurvedic, Chinese, and European herbal traditions.

In cooking: Add 3 to 5 whole cloves to curries, rice dishes, soups, or stews at the start of cooking. Remove before serving. Stud a whole onion or ham with cloves for slow roasting. Grind organic cloves in a spice grinder for use in baking.
Chai and beverages: Lightly crush 2 to 3 cloves and simmer with Cinnamon Sticks, Cardamom, and Ginger for a warming chai base. Also lovely in mulled wine with Star Anise and orange peel.
Clove tea: Steep 3 to 5 whole cloves in a cup of freshly boiled water for 10 to 15 minutes. Add honey if desired.
The name "clove" comes from the Latin "clavus" meaning "nail," a reference to the shape of the dried buds. These dried cloves sparked centuries of spice trade rivalry between European colonial powers, with the tiny Maluku Islands of Indonesia at the centre of it all. Chinese courtiers were reportedly required to hold cloves in their mouths when addressing the emperor to ensure fresh breath.
Cloves are not classified as toxic to dogs but should be kept away from cats, as eugenol can be harmful to felines. As with all spices, use sparingly around pets.
