Dried dandelion root tea from Taraxacum officinale is one of the most widely used roots in Western herbal medicine. This certified organic dandelion root has a bitter, earthy flavour and is traditionally used to support healthy digestive function and liver health. Rich in inulin, a prebiotic fibre that supports beneficial gut bacteria, dandelion root tea benefits are well documented across herbal traditions spanning centuries.

Key Benefits

  • Digestive support: Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to support healthy digestion and relieve symptoms of mild indigestion. The bitter compounds stimulate normal digestive processes.
  • Liver health: Traditionally used to support healthy liver function and normal bile production. Recognised by herbal pharmacopoeias for this traditional use.
  • Prebiotic fibre: Dandelion root contains up to 40% inulin by dry weight, a well-researched prebiotic that supports a healthy gut microbiome.
  • Caffeine-free coffee alternative: When roasted, dandelion root produces a nutty, slightly bitter brew that makes an excellent caffeine-free alternative to coffee. This unroasted root can be home-roasted or brewed as a medicinal decoction.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, ensuring a clean root for tea and herbal preparations.

Decoction: Because this is a dried root, it needs simmering rather than steeping. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to a cup of water, bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink. Add honey, ginger, or cinnamon to taste.

Digestive blend: Combine with Peppermint for a soothing digestive tea, or with Nettle Leaf for a traditional spring tonic. A small piece of Licorice Root adds natural sweetness.

Home-roasted coffee: Spread dried root pieces on a baking tray and roast at 160 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes until dark and fragrant. Grind and brew as you would coffee. For a richer flavour, try blending with roasted chicory root.

The name "dandelion" comes from the French dent de lion (lion's tooth), referring to the deeply toothed leaves. The old folk name "pissabed" references the plant's well-known diuretic reputation.

Dandelion roots were roasted and used as a coffee substitute during both World Wars when coffee was scarce. Today, roasted dandelion coffee is popular in Australian cafes as a caffeine-free alternative.

Not suitable for people with gallstones or bile duct obstruction. May interact with diuretics and lithium. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
