Dried oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a certified organic culinary and medicinal herb with a bold, warm, pungent flavour that has made it a kitchen essential across Mediterranean, Mexican, and Middle Eastern cuisines. The name comes from the Greek for "joy of the mountains," and this versatile herb has been valued since ancient times for both its culinary depth and its traditional use in supporting healthy digestion. Rich in carvacrol and rosmarinic acid, oregano leaf is far more than just a pizza topping.

Key Benefits

  • Culinary essential: A bold, aromatic herb that brings warmth and depth to pasta sauces, pizza, grilled meats, roasted vegetables, soups, and marinades. A staple of Mediterranean cooking.
  • Digestive comfort: Traditionally used in herbal medicine to support healthy digestion and ease occasional bloating and stomach discomfort.
  • Respiratory tradition: Traditionally used in European herbalism as a warming herb during the cooler months, valued for respiratory comfort.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
  • Nutrient dense: Dried oregano is naturally high in iron, calcium, vitamin K, and manganese per gram, though typical serving sizes are small.

Cooking: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to pasta sauces, pizza bases, soups, stews, and marinades. Works best when added early in cooking to allow the flavour to develop. Crush between your fingers before adding to release the aromatic oils. Pairs beautifully with Rosemary and Thyme in classic herb blends.

Oregano tea: Steep 1 tablespoon of dried oregano leaf in a cup of hot water (just off the boil) for 3 to 5 minutes. Strain and add honey or lemon to taste. A warming, aromatic infusion traditionally enjoyed during the cooler months.

Infused oil: Fill a clean jar with dried oregano and cover with olive oil. Steep in a cool, dark place for 2 to 4 weeks, shaking occasionally. Strain and use as a flavoured cooking oil or bread dip. Also pairs well with Sage in poultry rubs and stuffing.

In ancient Greece, the goddess Aphrodite was said to have created oregano as a symbol of happiness. Greek and Roman couples wore crowns of oregano at their weddings as a blessing for joy and prosperity. The herb was also planted on graves to bring peace to the departed.

Oregano only became widely popular in Australian and American kitchens after World War II, when soldiers returned from Italy with a taste for the bold flavours of Mediterranean cooking. Before the 1940s, it was virtually unknown outside southern Europe.

Oregano essential oil is much more concentrated than dried leaf and should not be confused with this product. Oregano leaf is toxic to cats in all forms. Keep away from cats.
