Dried thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is one of the most versatile herbs in the kitchen, prized for its warm, earthy flavour with subtle floral notes. This certified organic thyme is rich in thymol, the compound responsible for its distinctive aroma and long history of use in both cooking and European herbal tradition. Whether you are making a classic bouquet garni, seasoning a roast, or brewing a soothing cup of thyme tea, this is a true pantry essential.

Key Benefits

  • Essential cooking herb: A foundation ingredient in roasts, soups, stews, stuffing, sauces, and herb blends like bouquet garni, herbes de Provence, and za'atar.
  • Rich in thymol: The primary active compound in thyme, naturally occurring and responsible for its characteristic warm, herbaceous flavour.
  • Respiratory tradition: Traditionally used in Western herbalism to help relieve coughs and support respiratory comfort. Recognised by the German Commission E for this purpose.
  • Packed with minerals: Dried thyme is notably rich in iron, manganese, and calcium by weight, though typical serving sizes are small.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, preserving the volatile oil content that gives thyme its flavour and aroma.

In cooking: Use 1 teaspoon of dried thyme per 4 serves. Add early in cooking to release the essential oils. Rub between your fingers before adding to help release the flavour. One teaspoon dried equals roughly one tablespoon fresh.

Herb blends: Combine with Rosemary and Sage for a classic poultry seasoning, or blend with Oregano for a Mediterranean herb mix. Thyme is the backbone of a traditional French bouquet garni.

Thyme tea: Steep 1 to 2 teaspoons in a covered cup of freshly boiled water for 5 to 10 minutes. Add honey and a squeeze of lemon for a warming winter cup.

The name "thyme" comes from the Greek "thymos," meaning either "courage" or "perfume." Ancient Greeks burned thyme as incense in their temples, and Roman soldiers bathed in thyme-infused water before battle. During the Black Death, thyme was carried in posies and burned indoors as a protective herb.

Thyme is generally considered safe around dogs and cats in normal culinary amounts. However, thyme essential oil (a much more concentrated form) should be kept away from pets, particularly cats.

Thyme is generally safe in culinary amounts. Large supplemental doses may slow blood clotting. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
