Self Heal
Botanical Name: Prunella vulgaris

Native to Europe and Asia Self heal grows well in temperate climates, it is an attractive spreading plant that reaches about 20cm high when in flower. The purple flowers form in dense clusters at stem ends. Self heal flowers in summer through to late autumn.

Self heal has been used as a wound herb for centuries. A poultice of the leaves can be applied to minor wounds to slow bleeding and encourage healing. Its astringent properties also make it useful as a mouthwash or gargle for sore throats, and bleeding gums. It is also used for sprains, burns, bruises, haemorrhoids and varicose veins.

In china it is used as a tonic herb for liver weakness or to cool liver fire.

Growing Conditions

A vigorous spreading plant Self heal will grow in a variety of conditions from average to good soil and full sun to partial shade. Regular watering is best for lush growth, but it will put up with dry conditions. In the right position it can become invasive.
