Damiana (Turnera diffusa, also known as Turnera aphrodisiaca) is a warmly aromatic herb with a long history of traditional use as a tonic for vitality, mood, and general wellbeing. The dried leaf has a pleasant, slightly spicy flavour and makes a smooth damiana tea that has been enjoyed for centuries in traditional herbal practice. It is one of the more popular herbs for those interested in natural support for energy and nervous system balance.

Key Benefits

  • Traditional tonic: Historically valued as a restorative herb, traditionally used to support vitality and general wellbeing during times of fatigue or low energy.
  • Mood support: Traditionally used to help support a positive mood and ease occasional nervous tension. Contains flavonoids including apigenin.
  • Aromatic flavour: The dried leaf has a pleasant, warm, slightly bitter taste with spicy undertones, making it enjoyable as a standalone tea or blended.
  • Versatile use: Can be brewed as a tea, used as a base for herbal liqueurs, or blended into smoking mixes as a tobacco alternative.

Tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried damiana leaf to a cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. The flavour is warm and slightly bitter, with a pleasant aromatic quality. Sweeten with honey if desired.

Blends: Pairs well with Passionflower for relaxation, or with Peppermint for a refreshing, uplifting blend. Also combines nicely with Lemon Balm for mood support.

Herbal liqueur: Damiana leaf can be steeped in vodka or brandy for 2 to 4 weeks with honey and spices to make a traditional herbal cordial.

Damiana has a rich history in traditional herbal medicine, where it was valued as an aphrodisiac and tonic. The Mayan name "Mizibcoc" translates to "the plant that makes the sun smile," which gives you some idea of its traditional reputation.

The dried leaf is also used in herbal smoking blends as a mild, aromatic base. It burns smoothly and has a pleasant flavour, making it a popular choice for those looking for a tobacco-free alternative.
