Horny goat weed (Epimedium sagittatum) is a classic yang tonic in Traditional Chinese Medicine, used to enhance libido, strengthen the bones, and revitalise energy. The dried leaf is commonly brewed as tea, taken as part of herbal formulas, or included in long-term vitality blends.
- Traditionally used to support libido, sexual vitality, and circulation
- Backed by research for mild PDE5-inhibiting activity (similar pathway as sildenafil)
- May support bone density and hormone balance in postmenopausal women
- Offers mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects to support healthy ageing
- Included in tonic blends for fatigue, joint support, and men’s wellness
Tea: Simmer 1–2 tsp dried leaf in water for 10–15 minutes. Drink once or twice daily as a tonic.
TCM method: Stir-fry with a small amount of fat to enhance warming (yang) properties before decocting.
Extract/Tincture: Use 2–4 mL of 1:5 extract up to twice daily, or follow practitioner guidance.
Powder: Blend with honey or warm drinks. Often paired with maca, tribulus, or ginseng in men’s vitality blends.
Herbal Wine: Traditionally infused in rice wine and taken in small daily doses for circulation and vitality.
Horny goat weed is best used consistently for 2–4 weeks to build its effect. Traditionally taken in cooler months as a warming tonic, though used year-round today. Can be blended with other herbs for performance, mood, or bone support. Known for its role in TCM aphrodisiac lore, it also contributes to anti-ageing and hormone support formulas.
