Horny goat weed (Epimedium sagittatum), known as Yin Yang Huo in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a well-known TCM kidney yang tonic that has been used in Chinese herbal medicine for over 1,000 years. This dried epimedium leaf contains icariin, a flavonoid compound that has been the subject of extensive modern research. In TCM, horny goat weed is traditionally used to support kidney yang energy, vitality, and overall wellbeing.

Key Benefits

  • TCM kidney yang tonic: Traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine to tonify kidney yang, support vitality, and strengthen the body's warming energy. One of the most well-known yang tonic herbs.
  • Contains icariin: The key active compound, icariin, is a prenylated flavonoid unique to Epimedium species and has been the subject of over 3,000 published research papers.
  • Energy and vitality: Traditionally used to support energy levels, physical stamina, and overall vitality, particularly during periods of fatigue or depletion.
  • Joint and bone support: Traditionally used in TCM to support healthy bones and joints, particularly in combination with other kidney yang tonic herbs.

Tea infusion: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried epimedium leaf to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is mild and slightly grassy.

TCM-style blend: In Chinese herbal tradition, Yin Yang Huo is often combined with Astragalus Root for Qi and yang support, or with Ginger Root for added warmth.

Tincture: Pack a jar one-third full with dried epimedium leaf. Cover with vodka (40% alcohol). Seal and store in a dark place for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle.

The colourful common name comes from a Chinese legend about a goat herder who noticed his flock became unusually energetic after grazing on epimedium plants. The Chinese name Yin Yang Huo translates more poetically as "herb of the lustful goat."

Epimedium is also a popular ornamental garden plant in temperate climates, valued for its heart-shaped leaves and delicate spring flowers. There are over 60 species of Epimedium, but E. sagittatum is the species most commonly used in TCM.
