Licorice root is a classic herbal ally for the digestive and respiratory systems, known for its naturally sweet flavour and soothing, anti-inflammatory properties. It’s used in teas, syrups, and blends to coat mucous membranes, support adrenal function, and balance strong herbs. Our cut licorice root is rich, aromatic, and easy to brew.

  • Traditionally used to soothe coughs, sore throats, ulcers, and indigestion
  • Demulcent and anti-inflammatory — coats and protects mucous membranes
  • Adaptogenic action supports adrenal health and energy during stress
  • Sweet flavour improves taste and synergy of herbal blends
  • Backed by research for respiratory, gastric, skin, and hormonal balance support

Tea: Simmer 1–2 tsp in 1 cup water for 10–15 minutes. Drink hot or cold. Can be blended with ginger, peppermint, fennel, or slippery elm.

Blends: Add 5–20% licorice root to tea formulas to enhance sweetness and harmonise herbs. Great in throat, digestion, and adrenal teas.

Culinary: Use in brewing, gin flavouring, or to add depth to herbal tonics and broths.

Topical: Apply as a poultice to skin for irritation, or infuse into creams and balms for anti-inflammatory effects.

Pets: Used in holistic formulas for respiratory or allergy support in dogs. Consult a vet before use in pets.

Licorice is a staple in traditional herbal formulas and natural medicine cabinets worldwide. Customers love it for its sweet taste and versatility — many blend it with lemon balm, chamomile, or marshmallow for tea, or use it alone as a daily digestive soother. Also used in herbal liqueurs, gin, and bitters. Avoid long-term use unless guided by a practitioner due to effects on blood pressure and potassium.

Store airtight and away from heat. Not for use during pregnancy, or with high blood pressure, kidney, or heart issues. Best used for short periods unless practitioner-guided.

  • Actions: Demulcent, adaptogen, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, phytoestrogenic, harmoniser
  • Systems: Digestive, respiratory, endocrine, immune, integumentary
  • Energetics: Sweet, moistening, slightly cooling
  • Pairings: Marshmallow, slippery elm, peppermint, ashwagandha, fennel, ginger
  • Clinical note: Use with caution in hypertension, oedema, or with medications affecting potassium/cortisol. DGL form is preferred for long-term gut support.
