Rhubarb root powder (Rheum palmatum), also known as Chinese rhubarb or Turkish rhubarb, is a potent digestive herb with a 2,000-year history in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This certified organic rhubarb root powder is not the same as garden rhubarb used in cooking. Medicinal rhubarb root is traditionally used in small doses to support digestive comfort and in larger doses to promote bowel regularity.
Key Benefits
- Digestive support: Traditionally used in small doses as a bitter digestive tonic to support healthy digestive function and ease stomach discomfort.
- Bowel regularity: Traditionally used in larger doses to support regular bowel movements. Contains naturally occurring compounds that promote healthy bowel function.
- Dose-dependent action: An unusual herb in that small doses (under half a teaspoon) have a toning, astringent effect on digestion, while larger doses promote bowel movement. Start with a small amount and adjust.
- TCM heritage: Known as Da Huang in Chinese herbal medicine, rhubarb root has been one of the most important herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia for over 2,000 years.
- Certified organic: Ground from certified organic medicinal rhubarb root.
Digestive tea (small dose): Stir a quarter to half a teaspoon of rhubarb root powder into a cup of hot water. Drink before meals for digestive support. The flavour is strongly bitter and astringent.
Bowel support (larger dose): Use 1 to 2 teaspoons in hot water as needed. Effects are typically felt within 6 to 10 hours. Do not exceed recommended amounts. Combine with Ginger Root to reduce the chance of stomach griping.
Blending: In Chinese herbal tradition, rhubarb root is often combined with Licorice Root to moderate its action, or with warming herbs like ginger to balance its cold nature.
Medicinal rhubarb root (Rheum palmatum) is a completely different plant from garden rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum). The stalks of garden rhubarb are eaten as food, but the root of medicinal rhubarb is far more potent and should only be used in measured doses.
Historically, rhubarb root was one of the most valuable trade goods on the Silk Road, sometimes worth more than opium or saffron by weight. Marco Polo documented the rhubarb trade during his travels in the 13th century.
