Slippery elm bark powder (Ulmus rubra) is a classic demulcent herb known for its ability to coat, calm, and protect irritated tissues. Traditionally used for sore throats, reflux, IBS, and gut healing, it forms a thick, soothing drink when mixed with water.
- Soothes sore throat, heartburn, indigestion, and irritated bowels
- Forms a protective mucilage to coat and calm mucous membranes
- Commonly used for reflux, gastritis, ulcers, IBS, or diarrhea
- Can be applied as a poultice for skin inflammation and minor wounds
- Nutritive and fibre-rich — traditionally used for convalescence and gut repair
Powder: Mix 1–2 tsp with warm water to make a thick drink. Drink 1–3 times daily for digestive comfort or before meals to coat the stomach.
Cold Infusion: Stir into cold water and let sit for 30–60 minutes for a milder preparation.
Smoothies: Blend ½–1 tsp into smoothies with banana, almond milk, or collagen for a gentle gut-supporting tonic.
Bedtime blend: Mix with milk, cocoa, or honey for a gentle nighttime drink for reflux or digestive tension.
Topical: Make into a paste for poultices to soothe burns, bites, or skin irritation.
Pets: Make a syrup for cats or dogs with mild digestive issues — ½ tsp simmered in ½ cup water, cooled and given by syringe or in food.
Slippery elm bark powder is gentle enough for children and pets (with guidance) and often used in pregnancy for heartburn. A common addition in gut healing and leaky gut protocols, it may be blended with marshmallow, licorice, fennel, or probiotics. Not suitable for concurrent use with medications due to mucilage interference — space by at least 2 hours.
Store airtight. Avoid in strictures or post-surgery unless advised. Sustainably sourced preferred due to at-risk wild populations.
