Ashwagandha root (Withania somnifera), also known as withania, is a certified organic adaptogenic herb traditionally used to support the body's response to stress and promote overall vitality. This is the whole dried root, ideal for making decoctions, tinctures and herbal preparations. Ashwagandha has been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic herbalism for thousands of years, valued as a rejuvenating tonic.

Key Benefits

  • Stress and resilience: Traditionally used as an adaptogen to help the body cope with physical and mental stress. One of the most valued ashwagandha benefits.
  • Energy and vitality: Traditionally used as a rejuvenating tonic to support overall energy and stamina without overstimulation.
  • Sleep support: Traditionally used to promote calm and restful sleep. The name ashwagandha translates roughly as "smell of the horse," referring to its reputed ability to give the strength of a stallion.
  • Whole dried root: Dried root pieces for those who prefer to prepare their own decoctions, tinctures and extracts at home.
  • Rich in withanolides: Ashwagandha root contains withanolides, the key bioactive compounds associated with its traditional uses.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried ashwagandha root to 2 cups of water. Bring to a gentle boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is earthy and slightly bitter. Add honey or milk to taste.

Tincture: Make a 1:5 tincture with 45% alcohol for a convenient daily preparation.

Blending: Combine with Licorice Root to soften the flavour and add sweetness. For a calming evening blend, pair with Passionflower. For an energising adaptogenic blend, combine with Rhodiola Root.

Ashwagandha belongs to the nightshade (Solanaceae) family, making it a relative of tomatoes and capsicums. The plant produces small red berries enclosed in a papery calyx, similar to a cape gooseberry.

In Ayurvedic tradition, ashwagandha is classified as a "rasayana" or rejuvenating herb. It was traditionally prepared as a milk decoction (known as "ashwagandha ksheerapaka") by simmering the root in milk with spices.
