Learn more about this collection

Lavender is one of the most versatile herbs you can grow. It looks beautiful, smells wonderful, attracts bees and beneficial insects, and has a long list of culinary and household uses. Our lavender plants are all certified organic, propagated and raised at our nursery on the Gold Coast.

We carry a range of lavender species to suit different climates and garden styles. French lavender (Lavandula dentata) is our most popular variety and does particularly well in warm, humid climates like South East Queensland. AvonView lavender (Lavandula stoechas) has the distinctive butterfly-like flower heads that many people associate with lavender. Allardii lavender is a vigorous hybrid that grows well as a hedge, while Canary Island lavender and green lavender offer something different for collectors and unusual garden plantings.

All lavender plants prefer full sun and well-drained soil. They are drought tolerant once established and need very little feeding. For related products, browse our dried lavender, lavender essential oil and cottage garden plants.

Lavender is one of those herbs that earns its place in almost any garden. It brings colour, scent and pollinators, and asks very little in return. Full sun, good drainage and the occasional prune after flowering will keep it thriving for years.

    Frequently asked questions

Which lavender grows best in Australia?

French lavender (Lavandula dentata) is one of the best choices for Australian gardens, especially in warm and humid climates like Queensland, northern NSW and coastal areas. It handles humidity better than English lavender and flowers for much of the year. In cooler southern states, English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) also grows well. We grow all our lavender plants on the Gold Coast, so every variety in this collection is suited to warm climates.

When is the best time to plant lavender?

In warm climates like the Gold Coast and South East Queensland, you can plant lavender most of the year, though autumn and spring are ideal because the soil is warm and the weather is mild. In cooler climates, plant in spring after the last frost so the roots can establish before winter. Avoid planting in the heat of midsummer if you can.

Can I grow lavender in a pot?

Yes, lavender grows well in pots. Use a container at least 25 to 30cm across with good drainage holes. Choose a quality potting mix and add some perlite or coarse sand to improve drainage. Place the pot in full sun and avoid overwatering. Lavender in pots will need water more often than those in the ground, but the soil should dry out between waterings.

    How do I prune lavender?

Prune lavender after each flush of flowers by cutting back into the green, leafy growth. Never cut into the old, woody stems as lavender does not regrow well from bare wood. A good rule of thumb is to remove about one-third of the plant's height. Regular pruning keeps lavender compact, bushy and productive. In warm climates, you may get two or three pruning opportunities per year.

    Does lavender need much water?

Lavender is drought tolerant once established and prefers to be on the dry side. Water newly planted lavender regularly for the first few weeks while the roots settle in, then reduce watering. Overwatering is one of the most common reasons lavender plants struggle. If the soil stays wet for long periods, the roots can rot. Good drainage is more important than regular watering.
