Learn more about this collection

Mint is one of the easiest herbs to grow and one of the most useful. It is perfect for teas, cooking, cocktails and home remedies. Our mint plants are all certified organic, propagated and raised at our nursery on the Gold Coast.

With 23 varieties in the collection, there is a mint for every taste. Spearmint is the classic all-rounder for drinks, salads and lamb dishes. Peppermint has a stronger menthol kick and is traditionally used for digestive teas and natural remedies. We also grow white peppermint and Japanese menthol mint for those who love an intense cool flavour.

If you cook Asian food, Vietnamese mint (Persicaria odorata) is a must. It is not a true mint but brings that distinctive spicy, coriander-like flavour to rice paper rolls, laksa and salads. Hung Cay mint is another excellent choice for Vietnamese and Thai dishes.

For something a bit different, try chocolate mint with its rich cocoa undertone, pineapple mint with its fruity variegated leaves, or ginger mint with a warm spicy note. Eau de Cologne mint has a beautiful citrus perfume and makes a lovely addition to potpourri and bath soaks.

We also carry two native Australian mints. Native river mint (Mentha australis) has a clean, gentle flavour and grows well in moist, partly shaded spots. Mentha diemenica is another native species worth growing for its hardiness and unique flavour.

Mint is vigorous and spreads by runners, so most varieties do best in pots or contained garden beds. Browse our dried peppermint and spearmint tea if you want mint for the teapot straight away, or explore our full herb plant range for more options.

    About Mint

Mint is one of the most rewarding herbs to grow. It is fast, fragrant, and almost impossible to kill. A single plant will keep you in fresh leaves for teas, cooking, cocktails and home remedies all year round. The trick is keeping it contained, because mint loves to spread.

We grow 23 mint varieties at Mudbrick Herb Cottage on the Gold Coast, from kitchen staples like spearmint and peppermint to native Australian mints and unusual flavoured types. All are certified organic and shipped fresh by Express Post. If you are not sure which mint to start with, spearmint and peppermint are the two essentials. Visit our blog for growing tips.

    Frequently asked questions

When should I plant mint in Australia?

You can plant mint in most parts of Australia from early spring through to autumn. In warm climates like Queensland, mint grows year-round and can be planted at any time. It will establish fastest in spring when soil temperatures are rising and growth is at its strongest.

Is mint better in pots or in the ground?

Pots are usually the best choice. Mint spreads aggressively by underground runners and can quickly take over a garden bed. Growing it in a pot or a sunken container keeps it contained. Use a pot at least 30cm wide with good drainage, and refresh the potting mix every year or two as mint is a hungry plant.

What are the most common types of mint plants?

Spearmint and peppermint are the two most widely grown. Spearmint has a sweet, mild flavour used in cooking and drinks. Peppermint is stronger with more menthol and is traditionally used for teas and natural remedies. Beyond these, there are dozens of specialty mints like chocolate mint, pineapple mint and Moroccan mint, each with its own distinct flavour.

Where should you not plant mint?

Avoid planting mint directly in a garden bed alongside other herbs or vegetables. Its runners will spread into neighbouring plants and compete for space and nutrients. Keep it in pots or in a bed with solid edging buried at least 30cm deep. Also avoid very dry, exposed spots. Mint likes consistent moisture and will struggle in full hot sun without regular watering.

What is the secret to growing mint?

Keep it watered and contained. Mint is one of the few herbs that actually likes moist soil, so water it regularly, especially in pots during summer. Give it morning sun with afternoon shade in hot climates. Cut it back hard a few times a year to encourage fresh, bushy growth. And always grow it in a pot or contained area to stop it spreading through your garden.

Do you ship mint plants across Australia?

We ship mint plants by Express Post to most Australian states. We are unable to send live plants to Western Australia, Northern Territory or Tasmania due to quarantine restrictions. Each plant is carefully packed to travel safely. See our shipping information page for details.
