Astragalus root (Astragalus membranaceus), known as Huang Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of the most important tonic herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia. This certified organic astragalus root has been used for over 2,000 years to support immune function, build vitality, and strengthen the body's resistance. As a dried root, astragalus needs simmering (decoction) to extract its active compounds. The flavour is mildly sweet and pleasant.
Key Benefits
- Immune support: Traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine to support healthy immune function and strengthen the body's natural defences. One of the most well-researched immune-supporting herbs, with extensive clinical and laboratory evidence.
- Qi tonic: Classified as a superior Qi tonic in TCM, meaning it is safe for long-term daily use to build energy, vitality, and overall resilience. Known as the "Great Protector."
- Adaptogenic qualities: Traditionally used to help the body adapt to physical and mental stress, supporting stamina and recovery during demanding periods.
- Longevity research: Astragalus has attracted significant research interest for its astragaloside compounds, which have been studied for their potential effects on cellular health and ageing.
- Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
Decoction: Add 2 to 3 slices or 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried astragalus root to 2 cups of water. Simmer gently for 20 to 30 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is mildly sweet and earthy. Can be simmered a second time to extract remaining compounds.
Soup and broth: In Chinese culinary tradition, astragalus root slices are commonly simmered into chicken soup, bone broth, or congee as a nourishing tonic. Simply add a few slices to the pot and remove before serving.
Immune blend: Simmer astragalus root with Ginger Root and Licorice Root for a classic TCM-inspired immune tonic. Add Dong Quai Root for the famous Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang formula.
In TCM tradition, astragalus root is considered a tonic herb for building long-term resilience, not a remedy for acute illness. Traditional practitioners recommend using astragalus root regularly during healthy periods to strengthen the body's defences, rather than during active colds or infections.
The name Huang Qi translates as "yellow leader," referring to both the yellow colour of the root and its status as a leading tonic herb. Astragalus is classified among the superior herbs in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing, China's oldest herbal text.
Traditional Chinese Medicine advises against use during active infections or acute illness. Not recommended for people with autoimmune conditions or those taking immunosuppressant medications without medical guidance. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
