Dong quai root (Angelica sinensis), known as Dang Gui in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of the most important herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia. Often called the "female ginseng," this certified organic dong quai root has been used for over 2,000 years as a blood-nourishing tonic, traditionally valued for supporting women's wellness and general vitality. As a dried root, dong quai needs simmering (decoction) to release its active compounds.

Key Benefits

  • TCM blood tonic: Traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine to nourish and invigorate the blood. One of the most prescribed herbs in TCM, appearing in numerous classical formulas.
  • Women's wellness: Traditionally used to support women's health and comfort throughout the monthly cycle. Known as the "female ginseng" for its traditional importance in women's herbal formulas.
  • General vitality: Traditionally used as a tonic herb to support overall vitality and wellbeing, particularly during periods of recovery or fatigue.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.

Decoction: Add 3 to 6 grams (roughly 1 to 2 teaspoons) of dried dong quai root to 2 cups of water. Simmer gently for 20 to 30 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is warm, slightly sweet, and aromatic.

TCM-style blend: In Chinese herbal tradition, dong quai is often paired with Astragalus Root for a classic Qi and Blood tonic. Add Ginger Root and Licorice Root for a warming, harmonised formula.

Soup ingredient: In Chinese culinary tradition, dong quai slices are simmered into chicken soup as a nourishing tonic, especially valued during recovery and cooler months.

The name "Dang Gui" is often translated as "state of return" or "should come back," referring to the belief that the herb helps return the body to a state of balance. Different parts of the dong quai root are used for different purposes in TCM: the head for stopping bleeding, the body for nourishing blood, and the tail for moving blood.

Dong quai is not the same as European angelica (Angelica archangelica), which Herb Cottage sells as Angelica Root. The two species have different traditional uses.
