Angelica root (Angelica archangelica) is a majestic, aromatic herb with a warm, complex flavour that has been valued in European herbal medicine and liqueur-making for centuries. This certified organic angelica herb, also known as garden angelica, is traditionally used to support digestive comfort and respiratory health, and is a key botanical in gin, Chartreuse, and Benedictine. As a dried root, angelica needs simmering (decoction) to release its aromatic compounds.

Key Benefits

  • Digestive comfort: Traditionally used in European herbal medicine to support healthy digestive function and ease occasional bloating and stomach discomfort. A classic bitter-aromatic digestive herb.
  • Respiratory support: Traditionally used to support respiratory comfort and help ease coughs. The warming, aromatic quality of the root is traditionally valued during cold weather.
  • Brewing and distilling: A key botanical in gin distilling and a traditional ingredient in herbal liqueurs including Chartreuse, Benedictine, and vermouth. Also used in home brewing and bitters.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried angelica root to a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is warm, aromatic, slightly sweet, and slightly bitter.

Digestive blend: Simmer angelica root with Ginger Root for a warming digestive decoction. Add Peppermint after removing from heat for a classic bitter-aromatic digestive tea.

Gin botanical: Add dried angelica root to a gin botanical mix alongside juniper, coriander, and citrus peel. Angelica root adds depth, earthiness, and helps bind other flavours together.

According to legend, the Archangel Michael revealed angelica's healing properties to a monk during a plague. The plant was believed to bloom on the feast of the Archangel (May 8), and was planted around monasteries as protection against evil and illness.

This is European angelica (A. archangelica), a different species from dong quai (A. sinensis), which Herb Cottage sells as Dong Quai Root. The two have different traditional uses and flavour profiles.
