Barberry bark from Berberis vulgaris is a certified organic herb and one of the best-known natural sources of berberine, the yellow alkaloid that has attracted significant attention in modern wellness circles. This dried bark is traditionally used to support healthy digestion and liver function, and is best prepared as a decoction (simmered rather than steeped) to extract its bitter, yellow compounds. Barberry bark has a long history in traditional herbal practice stretching back thousands of years.

Key Benefits

  • Natural berberine source: Barberry bark contains 3 to 7 percent berberine by weight, along with other complementary alkaloids like berbamine and palmatine.
  • Digestive support: Traditionally used to support healthy digestion, ease occasional digestive discomfort, and stimulate appetite. The bitter flavour is considered a feature, not a bug.
  • Liver support: Traditionally used to support normal liver and gallbladder function. Valued as a bitter tonic in Western herbal traditions.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, providing a clean, whole-herb source of berberine.
  • Whole herb advantage: Unlike isolated berberine supplements, the whole bark contains a full spectrum of alkaloids and compounds that work together as nature intended.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried barberry bark to 2 cups of water. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is distinctly bitter and earthy with a yellow colour. Sweeten with honey if desired.

Blending: Pairs well with Dandelion Root for a traditional liver support blend, or with Licorice Root to balance the strong bitter flavour. Also combines well with Turmeric for a warming, golden decoction.

Note: Barberry bark will stain. The yellow berberine pigment can colour cups, cloths, and benchtops. Use a dedicated mug or teapot and wipe spills promptly.

Barberry has one of the longest documented histories of any medicinal plant. It was recorded on Assyrian clay tablets dating to around 650 BCE, where it was described as a remedy for "cleansing the blood." The renowned 17th-century herbalist Nicholas Culpeper also recommended it highly.

The bright yellow colour of barberry bark comes from its berberine content. This same compound was historically used as a natural dye for textiles, leather, and wood, producing a rich golden-yellow colour.
