Catnip tea (Nepeta cataria) is a versatile organic herb that serves double duty: a gentle, calming herbal tea for humans and a beloved enrichment herb for cats. This certified organic dried catnip produces a mild, minty infusion traditionally used to support relaxation and ease mild digestive discomfort. Catnip benefits extend beyond the teacup, as the nepetalactone compounds that drive cats wild also make this one of the most popular pet herbs available.
Key Benefits
- Calming and relaxing: Traditionally used as a gentle catnip tea to help ease mild nervous tension and promote relaxation. A pleasant evening tea with a light, minty flavour.
- Digestive comfort: Traditionally used to help soothe occasional stomach discomfort and support healthy digestion. Gentle enough for regular use.
- Enrichment for cats: Contains nepetalactone, the compound responsible for the well-known catnip for cats response. Sprinkle on scratching posts, toys, or bedding for feline enrichment.
- Certified organic: Dried catnip leaf grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, safe for both human and feline use.
- Natural insect deterrent: Nepetalactone has been shown to repel mosquitoes and other insects. Scatter dried catnip herb in outdoor areas or use in sachets.
Catnip tea (for humans): Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried catnip to a cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain and enjoy. The flavour is mild and gently minty. Sweeten with honey if desired.
Blending: For a soothing bedtime blend, combine with Chamomile or Passionflower. For digestive comfort, try pairing with Peppermint.
For cats: Sprinkle a pinch of dried catnip on toys, scratching posts, or bedding. You can also stuff it inside fabric toys. Not all cats respond to catnip, as sensitivity is genetic and affects roughly 50 to 70 percent of cats.
The catnip response in cats, which includes rolling, rubbing, and general euphoria, typically lasts 5 to 15 minutes and is completely harmless. Kittens under six months and older cats are less likely to respond. Big cats including lions and tigers also respond to catnip.
Catnip is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is closely related to peppermint and lemon balm. It was widely used in folk herbalism long before it became famous as a cat herb, valued as a calming tea for humans and a natural insect repellent.
Generally well tolerated. Use caution during pregnancy as catnip may stimulate uterine contractions in large doses. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
