Chaparral (Larrea tridentata), also known as creosote bush, is a wildcrafted desert herb from the American Southwest with a distinctive resinous aroma. This chaparral herb has been used in Native American herbal traditions for centuries, both externally as a poultice and internally as a tea. Chaparral contains NDGA (nordihydroguaiaretic acid), a potent antioxidant compound that has been the subject of considerable research interest.

Tea: Add half to one teaspoon of dried chaparral to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is strongly resinous and bitter. Not for daily long-term use.
External poultice: Steep chaparral in hot water, allow to cool, and apply the softened herb directly to the skin wrapped in clean cloth. Combines well with Calendula Petals for external skin preparations, or with Yarrow for topical washes.
Infused oil: Infuse dried chaparral in olive oil for 4 to 6 weeks for a topical oil. Strain thoroughly before use.
Larrea tridentata is one of the longest-living organisms on Earth. A clonal colony in the Mojave Desert known as "King Clone" is estimated to be over 11,700 years old. The plant's distinctive creosote smell after desert rain is one of the most iconic scents of the American Southwest.
The FDA has issued consumer advisories regarding internal use of chaparral. This herb should be used with caution and is not suitable for long-term internal consumption.
