Dried calendula petals (Calendula officinalis) are one of the most versatile herbs you can keep on hand. These certified organic petals are prized for their gentle skin-soothing properties and make a beautiful golden tea with a mild, slightly sweet, earthy flavour. Also known as pot marigold, calendula has been traditionally used to support skin health and digestive comfort for centuries.
Key Benefits
- Skin soothing: Traditionally used to support healthy skin. Calendula petals are a popular base for homemade oils, salves, balms, and skin washes. The gentle nature of calendula makes it suitable for sensitive skin preparations.
- Digestive support: Traditionally used in herbal medicine to soothe the digestive tract and support healthy gut lining. A simple calendula tea after meals may help support digestive comfort.
- DIY skincare ingredient: Infuse in oil (olive, sweet almond, or jojoba) for 4 to 6 weeks to create calendula-infused oil, the foundation of homemade balms, lip balms, nappy creams, and soothing salves.
- Natural food colouring: Known as "poor man's saffron," calendula petals add a warm golden colour to rice, soups, baking, and butter. Entirely edible and food-safe.
- Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, important for petals used directly on skin and in food.
Tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried calendula petals to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink. Blends well with Chamomile for a soothing evening tea, or with Peppermint and Ginger Root for digestive support.
Oil infusion: Fill a clean jar one-third full with dried calendula petals. Cover completely with a carrier oil (olive or sweet almond). Seal and leave in a warm spot for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking gently every few days. Strain through muslin. Use the infused oil as-is or as a base for homemade balms and salves.
Culinary: Scatter petals into rice dishes, salads, or baked goods for natural golden colour and a mild flavour. Add to butter or cream cheese for visual appeal.
Calendula is not the same as the common garden marigolds (Tagetes species) found at hardware stores. True calendula (Calendula officinalis) is the only species with a long history of internal and topical use in herbal medicine.
The name "calendula" comes from the Latin word for the first day of the month, referring to its remarkably long flowering season. In warm climates like Queensland, calendula can flower almost year-round. Calendula is non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
Not recommended during pregnancy. People with allergies to the daisy family (Asteraceae) should avoid calendula. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
