Chickweed (Stellaria media) is a gentle, cooling herb that has been used in traditional Western herbalism for centuries. This dried chickweed herb is made from the aerial parts (leaves, stems, and flowers) and is most commonly brewed as a chickweed tea or used in topical preparations for chickweed skin comfort. Rich in vitamins and minerals, it has traditionally been valued as a nutritive spring tonic and a soothing herb for irritated skin.

Key Benefits

  • Skin support: Traditionally used as a cooling, soothing herb for minor skin irritations. Often applied as a poultice, wash, or added to bath water.
  • Nutritive herb: Chickweed is naturally rich in vitamin C, iron, and calcium. It has a long history of use as a nourishing spring tonic tea.
  • Gentle and mild: One of the gentlest herbs available, with a mild, slightly grassy flavour that blends well with stronger-tasting herbs.
  • Versatile preparation: Can be used as a tea, poultice, bath herb, or infused into oils and creams for topical use.
  • Traditional spring cleanser: Traditionally combined with other cleansing herbs like cleavers and dandelion as part of a seasonal spring blend.

Tea: Add 1 tablespoon of dried chickweed to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 to 15 minutes, then strain. Drink up to 3 cups daily. The flavour is mild and grassy.

Poultice: Soak dried chickweed in a small amount of hot water until soft, then apply the warm herb directly to the skin and cover with a clean cloth. This is a traditional method for soothing minor skin irritations.

Blending: Pairs well with Calendula for skin-focused blends, with Cleavers for a traditional spring cleansing tea, or with Nettle Leaf for a mineral-rich nutritive brew.

Chickweed gets its name from being a favourite food of chickens and small birds. It grows prolifically across most of the world and has been used as a food plant for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests humans have been eating chickweed since the Neolithic period.

Chickweed is safe for dogs and cats. In fact, some pet owners add small amounts to their pets' food as a gentle supplement. It is mildly toxic to horses, however, so keep it away from them.
