Fenugreek seeds (Trigonella foenum-graecum), also known as methi seeds, are one of the most versatile items in the spice rack. These certified organic fenugreek seeds have a distinctive warm, maple-like aroma and a slightly bitter, nutty flavour that mellows beautifully with toasting or simmering. Used across the world in curries, spice blends, and herbal teas, fenugreek benefits extend from the kitchen to traditional wellness, where the seeds have been valued for thousands of years.

Key Benefits

  • Culinary essential: A key ingredient in curry powders, spice blends, and pickles. The seeds add depth and warmth to dishes across many cuisines.
  • Rich in nutrients: High in iron, manganese, and dietary fibre. Also contains protein and B vitamins, making it one of the more nutritionally dense spices.
  • Digestive support: Traditionally used to support healthy digestion and ease occasional digestive discomfort. The mucilage content gives a soothing quality when brewed as a tea.
  • Versatile preparation: Toast for curries, soak overnight for a mild tea, grind into powder, or sprout for salads. Works in both sweet and savoury applications.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, ideal for both cooking and herbal use.

Fenugreek tea: Soak 1 teaspoon of seeds in a cup of cold water overnight, then strain and drink in the morning. Alternatively, lightly crush the seeds and simmer in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. The flavour is mild and slightly sweet.

Cooking: Dry-toast seeds in a pan for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden, then grind or add whole to curries, dhals, and spice blends. Use sparingly as the flavour is strong. Pairs beautifully with Turmeric and Ginger Root in warming dishes.

Sprouting: Soak seeds for 8 hours, then rinse twice daily for 2 to 3 days until sprouted. Add to salads and sandwiches. Also blends well with Cinnamon for a warming chai-style tea.

Fenugreek seeds were found in Tutankhamun's tomb, dating their use to at least 1323 BCE. The distinctive maple-syrup aroma comes from a compound called sotolon, which is also found in maple syrup itself.

Fenugreek is generally safe for dogs in small food amounts and is sometimes used as a flavouring in pet food. Keep quantities small and avoid concentrated extracts.

Not recommended during pregnancy. May interact with blood-thinning and diabetes medications. Can cause a maple-syrup scent in sweat and urine, which is harmless.
