Dried hops (Humulus lupulus) are the papery, cone-shaped female flowers of the hop vine, best known for their role in brewing but prized in herbalism for centuries. These certified organic hop flowers are intensely bitter and deeply aromatic, with a long tradition of use as a natural sleep aid and digestive bitter. Hops tea has been valued in European herbal practice since the Middle Ages for promoting restful sleep and calming a restless mind.
Key Benefits
- Sleep support: Traditionally used as a mild sedative and sleep aid. Hops have been used for centuries to help promote restful, undisturbed sleep, particularly when restlessness is due to tension or worry.
- Digestive bitter: The intensely bitter compounds in hops may help stimulate appetite and support healthy digestion when taken before meals.
- Calming nervine: Traditionally used to help ease mild nervous tension and promote a sense of calm. Works well as part of a relaxing evening routine.
- Dream pillows: Dried hops can be sewn into small sachets and placed inside a pillowcase to gently release their aromatic compounds overnight.
- Certified organic: Whole hop cones grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
Hops tea: Steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried hops in a cup of freshly boiled water for 10 to 15 minutes. The flavour is distinctly bitter, so honey or lemon can help. Best enjoyed in the evening, 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
Sleep blends: Hops pair beautifully with Valerian Root for a classic sleep combination, or with Passionflower and Chamomile for a gentler, more palatable evening blend.
Dream pillow: Fill a small muslin bag with dried hops, optionally adding lavender or chamomile. Place inside your pillowcase and replace every few months.
King George III of England famously used a hop-stuffed pillow to help with sleep. The tradition of hop pillows dates back to the Middle Ages, when field workers noticed they became drowsy while harvesting hop flowers. Hops belong to the Cannabaceae family, making them botanical cousins of hemp.
Critical pet safety warning: Hops are extremely toxic to dogs and can be fatal, causing rapid, uncontrollable overheating. Keep all dried hops well out of reach of dogs. If a dog ingests any amount, contact a vet immediately.
