Hyssop tea (Hyssopus officinalis) is a member of the mint family with a distinctive minty, floral flavour and a long tradition of use in Western herbal medicine. These certified organic hyssop leaves produce a slightly bitter, aromatic infusion that has been valued for respiratory and digestive support since ancient times. Hyssop is one of the most frequently referenced herbs in Western herbal history, with documented use stretching back to ancient Greece, where Hippocrates valued it for chest and throat complaints.

Key Benefits

  • Respiratory tradition: Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to support healthy respiratory function. Valued for centuries as an expectorant to help relieve symptoms of mild coughs and upper respiratory congestion.
  • Digestive support: Traditionally used as a bitter digestive herb. The intensely aromatic compounds may help support healthy digestion when taken before or after meals.
  • Calming nervine: Traditionally used to help ease mild nervous tension and promote a sense of calm. Works well as part of a relaxing evening tea blend.
  • Rich in polyphenols: Contains rosmarinic acid, flavonoids including luteolin and quercetin, and aromatic compounds that contribute to its characteristic flavour and aroma.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.

Hyssop tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried hyssop leaf to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes, then strain. The flavour is minty with floral, slightly bitter undertones. Add honey to taste.

Respiratory blends: Pairs well with Thyme for a traditional respiratory support blend, or with Mullein for a soothing chest tea. For a gentler, more palatable cup, combine with Peppermint and honey.

Steam inhalation: Add a tablespoon of dried hyssop to a bowl of steaming water. Cover your head with a towel and breathe gently for 5 to 10 minutes.

Hyssop is one of the most frequently mentioned herbs in the Bible, appearing in both the Old and New Testaments. In Psalm 51:7, King David wrote "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean," linking it to spiritual purification. It was also one of the herbs used by Carthusian monks to make the famous French liqueur Chartreuse.

The dried herb is not considered toxic to dogs or cats. However, hyssop essential oil (a concentrated product, not sold here) can be harmful to pets and should always be kept separate from the dried leaf.

Not suitable for use during pregnancy. Not recommended for people with epilepsy or seizure disorders. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
