Slippery elm powder (Ulmus rubra) is a certified organic bark powder traditionally used to soothe and support the digestive tract and throat. When mixed with water, slippery elm bark produces a smooth, mucilaginous gel that coats and comforts irritated tissues. This gentle demulcent has been valued in traditional herbalism for centuries.

Key Benefits

  • Digestive comfort: Traditionally used to soothe the stomach lining and support healthy digestion. One of the most well-known slippery elm benefits.
  • Throat comfort: The mucilage produced by slippery elm bark coats and soothes the throat, making it a go-to during the colder months.
  • Gentle and soothing: Suitable for sensitive stomachs. Traditionally used to support recovery from occasional digestive upset.
  • Versatile powder format: Mixes easily into porridge, smoothies, water or warm drinks. Can also be made into a paste or gruel.
  • Rich in mucilage: Contains high levels of natural mucilage, the compound responsible for its characteristic soothing, gel-like texture.

Slippery elm gruel: Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of slippery elm powder into a small amount of cold water to form a paste, then top up with hot water or warm milk, stirring continuously. Add honey to taste. Drink 1 to 3 times daily.

In food: Stir into porridge, yoghurt or smoothies for a gentle, nourishing addition. The mild flavour blends in easily.

Blending: Combine with Marshmallow Root for extra soothing support, or with Ginger Root to warm the blend. Chamomile Tea makes a calming companion.

The name "slippery elm" comes from the incredibly slippery, mucilaginous texture of the inner bark when moistened. First Nations peoples of North America used the bark extensively, both as a food and in traditional medicine.

Slippery elm is generally considered safe for dogs and is sometimes used by holistic veterinarians to support digestive comfort in pets. Always consult your vet before giving herbs to animals.
