St Mary's thistle powder (Silybum marianum), also known as milk thistle powder, is one of the most widely used herbs for liver support worldwide. This finely ground seed powder contains silymarin, a group of flavonolignans that have been the subject of extensive research. Traditionally used for over 2,000 years to support liver health and aid digestion, milk thistle powder is easy to add to smoothies, yoghurt, or food.
Key Benefits
- Liver support: Traditionally used to support healthy liver function and protect liver cells. The most well-known milk thistle benefit, backed by a long history of traditional use.
- Digestive comfort: Traditionally used as a bitter tonic to support healthy digestion and ease occasional stomach discomfort.
- Contains silymarin: The seed contains the silymarin complex, a group of flavonolignans including silybin, which has been extensively studied for its antioxidant properties.
- Versatile powder format: Mixes easily into smoothies, yoghurt, juice, or can be stirred into food. More convenient than brewing whole seeds.
- Gentle daily support: Well-tolerated by most people and traditionally used as a gentle, ongoing liver tonic.
In smoothies or food: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of milk thistle powder to a smoothie, yoghurt, or sprinkle over cereal. The mild, slightly nutty flavour blends in easily. Best taken with food for improved absorption.
As a tea: Stir 1 teaspoon into a cup of hot water and let it settle. The powder does not fully dissolve, so stir before drinking. A decoction (simmering for 15 to 20 minutes) extracts more of the active compounds.
Blending: Pairs well with Dandelion Root for a traditional liver support combination. Also complements Turmeric Powder in a morning smoothie, or try with Peppermint for digestive comfort.
The name "St Mary's thistle" comes from a legend that the distinctive white veins on the plant's leaves were caused by drops of the Virgin Mary's milk falling onto them. This is also the origin of its other common name, milk thistle.
Milk thistle is one of the few herbs also used in veterinary medicine. It is commonly recommended by veterinarians to support liver function in dogs and cats, making it safe to have around pets.
