Valerian tea (Valeriana officinalis) is one of the most well-known herbal remedies for sleep and relaxation. This certified organic valerian root tea has been traditionally used for centuries to support restful sleep and ease mild nervous tension. The valerian tea benefits are backed by a long history of use and a growing body of modern research. The tea has a distinctive earthy, pungent aroma and a strong, slightly bitter flavour. While the taste takes some getting used to, the valerian for sleep tradition keeps many people coming back for its effectiveness.

Key Benefits

  • Sleep support: Traditionally used to help promote restful, undisturbed sleep and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. One of the most widely used herbal sleep aids worldwide.
  • Nervous tension: Traditionally used to help ease mild anxiety, restlessness, and nervous tension. May support a calmer state of mind before bed.
  • Muscle relaxation: Traditionally used to help relieve mild muscle tension and promote physical relaxation.
  • Certified organic: Dried valerian root grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
  • Active compounds: Contains valerenic acid and isovaleric acid, along with iridoids (valepotriates) and flavonoids that contribute to its traditional calming properties.

Valerian root tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried valerian root to a cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. The taste is strong, so many people add honey or blend with other herbs to soften the flavour.

Blending: For a gentle sleep blend, combine with Passionflower, another well-regarded calming herb. To soften the strong flavour, try adding Lemon Balm or Chamomile, both of which also support relaxation.

Valerian has a curious effect on cats. Much like catnip, the scent of valerian root can cause cats to become excited, playful, and euphoric. This is because valerian contains actinidine, a compound similar to the nepetalactone found in catnip. Store your valerian root securely if you have feline friends.

In medieval folklore, valerian was known as "all-good" and was believed to ward off evil. Some scholars believe the Pied Piper of Hamelin may have used valerian to lure the rats, as rodents are also attracted to its strong scent.
