Yarrow tea (Achillea millefolium) is a certified organic herb traditionally used to support healthy circulation and digestive comfort. One of the most versatile herbs in the traditional herbalist's toolkit, yarrow has been valued for thousands of years across many cultures. The dried aerials produce a pleasantly aromatic, slightly bitter infusion with a warm, herbaceous character.
Key Benefits
- Circulatory support: Traditionally used to support healthy blood flow and peripheral circulation. One of the best-known yarrow benefits.
- Digestive comfort: Traditionally used as a bitter tonic to support healthy digestion and ease occasional digestive discomfort.
- Seasonal wellness: Traditionally used during the colder months to support the body's natural defences and promote perspiration.
- Versatile herb: Used as a tea, in tinctures, as a compress, or in herbal baths. A true all-rounder in the herb cabinet.
- Aromatic flavour: Produces a pleasant, slightly bitter tea with a warm, herbaceous aroma. Blends well with other herbs.
Yarrow tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried yarrow to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 to 15 minutes, covered. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily. Add honey to soften the bitter notes if preferred.
Blending: For a traditional cold-season blend, combine with Elderflower and Peppermint in equal parts. For digestive support, blend with Chamomile.
External use: Brew a strong tea (double strength) and use as a compress or add to a warm bath for traditional skin care applications.
The botanical name Achillea comes from the Greek hero Achilles, who according to legend used yarrow to staunch the wounds of his soldiers during the Trojan War. This association with wound care gave yarrow many folk names, including "soldier's woundwort" and "nosebleed plant."
Yarrow grows readily in Australia and is a common sight along roadsides and in meadows. It is generally considered safe around dogs and cats, though large quantities may cause digestive upset in pets.
