Mullein tea is made from the soft, woolly leaves of Verbascum thapsus, a herb that has been valued in traditional European herbal medicine for centuries. Rich in natural mucilage and saponins, this certified organic mullein herb is one of the most popular herbal teas for respiratory comfort. The mullein tea benefits that have made it a household staple for generations centre on its traditionally recognised ability to help relieve symptoms of mild upper respiratory tract congestion.
Key Benefits
- Respiratory comfort: Traditionally used to help soothe the throat and support clear, comfortable breathing. The natural mucilage content provides a gentle, coating effect.
- Gentle and mild: Mullein tea has a light, slightly sweet flavour that is easy to drink on its own or blended with other herbs.
- Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, ensuring a clean herb for tea and tincture making.
- Versatile preparation: Works well as a simple tea, steam inhalation, or infused in oil for external use.
- Caffeine-free: Naturally caffeine-free, suitable for drinking at any time of day.
Tea: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried mullein leaf to a cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain well through a fine cloth or coffee filter to remove the tiny leaf hairs, which can irritate the throat if left in.
Respiratory blend: Combines well with Thyme and Marshmallow Root for a soothing respiratory tea. Also pairs nicely with Peppermint for flavour and added freshness.
Steam inhalation: Add a generous handful of mullein leaf to a bowl of just-boiled water. Drape a towel over your head and breathe the steam gently for 5 to 10 minutes.
Mullein has collected over 50 common names through history. Many reference the soft, flannel-like texture of the leaves, while others like "Hag's Taper" and "Candlewick Plant" recall the old practice of dipping the dried flower stalks in tallow to make torches.
Always strain mullein tea carefully. The fine hairs on the leaves are a key identifying feature of the plant, but they can be irritating if swallowed. A paper coffee filter or fine muslin cloth does the job well.
Mullein leaf may slow the absorption of some medications due to its mucilage content. Separate doses by at least two hours. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
