Celery seed (Apium graveolens) is a versatile spice with a concentrated celery flavour that works beautifully in cooking and has a long tradition in herbal medicine. These certified organic celery seeds are tiny but packed with flavour, adding depth to soups, stews, coleslaws, Bloody Marys, and pickling brines. Celery seed is also traditionally used to support joint comfort and healthy fluid balance.

Key Benefits

  • Culinary spice: Adds intense celery flavour to dishes. Essential in Bloody Marys, celery salt, coleslaw dressing, potato salad, pickling spice, and soup bases. A little goes a long way.
  • Joint comfort: Traditionally used in herbal medicine to support joint comfort and help maintain healthy uric acid levels. A popular herb among those seeking natural joint support.
  • Fluid balance: Traditionally used as a mild, natural diuretic to support healthy fluid balance and kidney function.
  • Digestive support: Traditionally used in Ayurvedic and European herbal medicine to support healthy digestive function. The warming, aromatic quality of celery seed may help ease occasional bloating.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.

Cooking: Use half to one teaspoon in soups, stews, potato salads, and coleslaw. Grind with sea salt to make homemade celery salt. A must for authentic Bloody Marys and pickling brines.

Joint support tea: Add 1 teaspoon of celery seeds to a cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily. Combines well with Nettle Leaf and Ginger Root for a warming joint comfort blend.

Digestive tea: Lightly crush celery seeds and steep with Peppermint for a digestive tea after meals.

The ancient Greeks crowned victorious athletes with celery garlands, and the city of Selinunte in Sicily was named after the Greek word for celery (selinon). Wild celery was cultivated purely as a medicine for over 3,000 years before anyone thought to eat the stalks as food.

Celery seed is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats in small culinary amounts. People with celery allergy should avoid celery seed, as the same allergens are present in concentrated form.
