Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is a traditional Western nervine used to calm the mind, soothe nerves, and ease muscle tension. With a long history in American and folk herbalism, it supports stress recovery, improves sleep, and blends well with other calming herbs. A gentle ally for burnout, nervous energy, and chronic stress.

  • Traditionally used for anxiety, muscle tension, restlessness, and insomnia
  • Supports nervous system recovery from burnout, fatigue, and overstimulation
  • May help ease PMS tension, migraines, or stress-related gut discomfort
  • Non-sedating — promotes calm focus without drowsiness
  • Often used in stress blends with lemon balm, chamomile, or passionflower

Tea: Steep 1–2 tsp per cup of boiling water for 10–15 minutes. Drink up to 3 times daily. Often paired with chamomile, lemon balm, or lavender.

Tonic use: Use daily for 1–2 weeks to build nervous system tone and resilience. Effects accumulate over time.

Tincture: Take 2–4 mL (1:5) up to 3 times/day. Suitable in calming or sleep blends. Some prefer 0.5–1 mL in water throughout the day.

Infused baths or compresses: Brew strong infusion for topical use on tension headaches, sore muscles, or as a calming soak.

Pets: Sometimes used by herbal vets for dog anxiety (e.g. fireworks). Always consult a professional. Not suitable for cats.

Skullcap is well loved for its ability to calm the body without dulling the mind. Customers brew it as an evening tea or add it to meditation and sleep blends. It's also used by students, shift workers, and those recovering from burnout. A favourite for calming “wired but tired” states. For best effect, use consistently for 2–6 weeks. Crisp green colour and light bitter taste indicate freshness.

  • Grown and dried in Australia. Crisp colour and light bitterness are signs of freshness and quality.

Do not use during pregnancy or with sedatives unless advised. Avoid if allergic to mint family herbs. Store airtight away from heat and light. Always check source to avoid adulteration.

  • Actions: Nervine tonic, anxiolytic, antispasmodic, muscle relaxant, mild sedative
  • Systems: Nervous, musculoskeletal, reproductive, digestive
  • Energetics: Cooling, calming, mildly bitter
  • Pairings: Chamomile, lemon balm, valerian, passionflower, milky oats
  • Clinical note: Best used over time. Start with low doses and increase as needed. Monitor for liver safety — source from reputable suppliers only.
