Epilobium tea, also known as small-flowered willowherb (Epilobium parviflorum), has been a staple of traditional herbal medicine for decades. This epilobium herb is rich in polyphenols, particularly oenothein B, and the certified organic dried epilobium is traditionally used to support urinary tract comfort and healthy prostate function in men. The epilobium benefits are well regarded among herbalists, and the mild, smooth willowherb tea has a pleasant grassy flavour that is easy to drink daily.
Key Benefits
- Prostate support: Traditionally used in herbal medicine to support normal prostate function and relieve symptoms of lower urinary tract discomfort in men.
- Urinary comfort: Traditionally used to support healthy urinary flow and ease mild urinary symptoms. Recognised by herbal pharmacopoeias for this traditional use.
- Rich in polyphenols: Contains oenothein B, a potent antioxidant compound, along with flavonoids including myricitrin and quercetin glycosides.
- Certified organic: Dried aerials grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, ensuring a clean, high-quality herb.
- Gentle daily tea: Mild, pleasant flavour with a smooth mouthfeel, suitable for regular use as part of a daily wellness routine.
Epilobium tea: Add 1 teaspoon (about 1.5 to 2g) of dried epilobium to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes for a full extraction. Strain and drink 1 to 2 cups daily. A shorter 3 to 5 minute steep gives a milder flavour.
Blending: For a well-rounded men's health blend, combine with Nettle Root, which is also traditionally used to support urinary and prostate health. For a smoother, more aromatic cup, try adding Chamomile or Peppermint to brighten the flavour.
Epilobium was popularised by Austrian herbalist Maria Treben in her 1980 book "Health through God's Pharmacy," which became an international bestseller. She specifically recommended the small-flowered species for urinary and prostate support, a tradition that continues today.
The name "willowherb" refers to the willow-like shape of the leaves. Epilobium species are pioneer plants that colonise disturbed ground, and in folklore they are associated with resilience and renewal. The herb is non-toxic to dogs and cats.
