Stinging nettle root from Urtica dioica is a very different product to nettle leaf tea. While the leaf is valued as a nutritive tonic, the nettle root benefits centre on supporting urinary tract health and normal prostate function. Brew it as a nettle root tea by preparing a decoction (simmered, not steeped) to draw out its beneficial compounds, including lignans and plant sterols.

Key Benefits

  • Prostate support: Traditionally used to support normal prostate function and healthy urinary flow in men over 50.
  • Urinary tract health: May help maintain a healthy urinary system. One of the most well-researched herbs in this area, with several clinical studies supporting traditional use.
  • Unique active compounds: Contains lignans, beta-sitosterol, and polysaccharides that are specific to the root and not found in significant amounts in the leaf.
  • Pairs well with other herbs: Works alongside other traditional prostate-support herbs like saw palmetto, making it easy to create targeted blends.
  • Distinct from nettle leaf: A separate product with different traditional uses. The root targets urinary and prostate support, while the leaf is a mineral-rich nutritive tea.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried nettle root to 2 cups of water. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily. The flavour is mild and earthy.

Blending: Combines well with Saw Palmetto Powder for a traditional prostate support blend. For urinary comfort, try adding Marshmallow Root for its soothing mucilage. Also pairs nicely with Nettle Leaf Tea if you want to combine the benefits of both parts of the plant.

Nettle has been used by humans for at least 3,000 years. Bronze Age textiles made from nettle fibre have been found at archaeological sites, and the plant featured in the Anglo-Saxon "Nine Herbs Charm," one of the oldest recorded herbal remedies in English.

The stinging hairs of fresh nettle are completely neutralised by drying. Dried nettle root has no sting at all and is safe to handle and brew.
