Eyebright tea (Euphrasia officinalis) is one of the most well-known herbs in the Western herbal tradition for supporting eye comfort. This certified organic eyebright has a mildly bitter, astringent flavour and has been used for centuries as both an internal tea and an external eye compress. The name "eyebright" directly reflects its long history of traditional use for eye-related concerns.

Key Benefits

  • Eye comfort support: Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to support eye comfort and soothe tired, irritated eyes. One of the most specifically indicated herbs for eye support in the European herbal tradition.
  • External eye compress: Traditionally used as an eye wash or compress to soothe tired, strained, or irritated eyes. The astringent and soothing properties make it well suited to topical eye care.
  • Respiratory support: Traditionally used to support healthy sinuses and upper respiratory comfort. The astringent properties may help ease runny eyes and noses associated with seasonal irritants.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.

Tea infusion: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried eyebright to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily.

Eye compress: Brew a strong infusion (2 teaspoons per cup), allow to cool completely, and strain thoroughly through a fine cloth or coffee filter. Soak clean cotton pads in the cooled tea and place over closed eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. Always use freshly prepared, cooled solution.

Sinus blend: Combine eyebright with Nettle Leaf and Peppermint for a traditional seasonal comfort tea. Add Chamomile for extra soothing.

Eyebright's traditional use for eye support is one of the classic examples of the Doctrine of Signatures, the medieval belief that a plant's appearance indicates its medicinal use. The tiny flowers of eyebright have purple veins and a yellow spot that were thought to resemble a bloodshot eye.

When using eyebright as an eye compress, hygiene is essential. Always use freshly brewed, thoroughly strained, and fully cooled tea. Never apply hot or warm liquid near the eyes. Discard any leftover solution after use.

External eye preparations must be hygienically prepared and fully cooled before use. If eye symptoms persist, consult a healthcare provider. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
