Globe artichoke leaf (Cynara scolymus) is one of the most clinically studied herbs for liver and digestive support. This dried artichoke tea is made from the leaves of the artichoke plant (not the edible flower head) and has a pleasantly bitter flavour. Artichoke leaf is traditionally used to support healthy liver function and promote comfortable digestion, with extensive European clinical research supporting its traditional uses.

Key Benefits

  • Liver support: Traditionally used in European herbal medicine to support healthy liver function and the body's natural detoxification processes. One of the most well-researched herbs for liver support.
  • Digestive comfort: Traditionally used to support comfortable digestion, particularly after rich or heavy meals. The bitter compounds in artichoke leaf naturally stimulate bile production.
  • Cholesterol support: Traditionally used to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels within the normal range. Supported by multiple clinical studies.
  • Clinically studied: Globe artichoke leaf extract has been the subject of numerous clinical trials and is recognised by both the EMA and ESCOP for digestive and liver support.

Tea infusion: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried artichoke leaf to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink before meals for digestive support, or after meals for comfort. The flavour is pleasantly bitter.

Liver blend: Combine artichoke leaf with Dandelion Root and Peppermint for a classic liver support tea. Add Licorice Root for natural sweetness.

The medicinal part of the globe artichoke is the leaf, not the familiar edible flower head you see at the greengrocer. The leaves contain the highest concentration of cynarin and chlorogenic acid, the compounds most associated with the plant's liver-supporting properties.

Artichoke tea is hugely popular in Vietnam, where it is known as "tra atiso" and sold as a ready-made beverage throughout the country. The bitter flavour is valued as a digestive aid after meals.

People with allergies to the daisy family (Asteraceae) should avoid. Not recommended for people with gallstones or bile duct obstruction without medical guidance.
