Marshmallow root powder (Althaea officinalis) is one of the most soothing herbs available, thanks to its exceptionally high mucilage content. This certified organic marshmallow root powder creates a smooth, silky liquid when mixed with water, coating and soothing irritated tissues on contact. Marshmallow root powder is traditionally used to support digestive comfort, soothe the throat, and calm irritated skin.
Key Benefits
- Soothing and demulcent: Contains up to 35% mucilage, one of the highest levels of any herb. Creates a smooth, coating sensation that soothes irritated tissues on contact.
- Digestive comfort: Traditionally used to soothe the lining of the digestive tract and support comfortable digestion. The mucilage coats and calms irritated mucous membranes.
- Throat soothing: Traditionally used to help relieve sore throats and dry, irritating coughs. The coating action provides immediate comfort.
- Convenient powder form: Stirs easily into water, smoothies, or recipes. No simmering required. Also popular in DIY face masks, hair treatments, and skincare preparations.
- Certified organic: Ground from certified organic marshmallow root.
Cold infusion (best for mucilage): Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons of marshmallow root powder into a cup of cold or room-temperature water. Let stand for 30 minutes to 2 hours, stirring occasionally. The liquid will thicken to a smooth, silky consistency. Cold water extracts more mucilage than hot water.
Hot tea: Stir 1 teaspoon into a cup of warm (not boiling) water. Blends well with Licorice Root for a sweet, soothing throat tea, or with Chamomile for a calming digestive blend.
Skincare: Mix marshmallow root powder with honey or yoghurt for a soothing face mask. The mucilage creates a smooth, hydrating preparation. Combine with Calendula Petals for a skin-soothing blend.
The original marshmallow confection was made by whipping the mucilaginous root extract of this plant with sugar and egg whites. Modern marshmallows use gelatin instead, but the name lives on as a reminder of the sweet's herbal origins.
Marshmallow root powder may slow the absorption of other medications taken at the same time due to its coating action. Take medications at least one hour before or two hours after marshmallow root. Non-toxic to dogs and cats.
