Muira puama (Ptychopetalum olacoides) is a traditional Amazonian tonic herb that has been used in Brazilian folk medicine for generations. This dried muira puama bark makes a mild, woody-flavoured muira puama tea and is traditionally valued as a nerve tonic and general wellbeing support. As a bark, muira puama needs simmering (decoction) to extract its active compounds effectively.

Key Benefits

  • Traditional tonic: Used in Brazilian herbal tradition as a general tonic for vitality and overall wellbeing. Known locally as "potency wood" for its traditional reputation as a strengthening herb.
  • Nervous system support: Traditionally used to support healthy nervous system function and help maintain energy levels during periods of fatigue.
  • Amazonian heritage: One of the most valued tonic herbs in the Brazilian pharmacopoeia, with a long history of traditional use across multiple indigenous and folk traditions.
  • Decoction herb: As a dried bark, muira puama needs gentle simmering for 15 to 20 minutes to release its beneficial compounds.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried muira puama bark to a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is mild and woody. Can be combined with Ginger Root for warmth.

Tincture: Pack a jar one-third full with muira puama bark. Cover with vodka or brandy (40% alcohol). Seal and store in a dark place for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle.

Tonic blend: Combine with Astragalus Root for a dual tonic decoction, or add Licorice Root for natural sweetness.

The name "muira puama" comes from the Tupi language of Brazil, meaning "potency wood." It has been listed in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia since the 1950s and is one of the most commonly prescribed herbs by Brazilian natural health practitioners.

Research on muira puama is still limited compared to more widely studied herbs. Most evidence is based on traditional use and preliminary studies. Consult a qualified herbalist for guidance on appropriate use.
